EPFO service update: The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has announced easier access to account information through WhatsApp and automatic settlement for certain small, inoperative provident fund accounts. This is a member service update. It does not announce a new employer filing, contribution rate or payment deadline.
What information will be available through WhatsApp?
According to the Press Information Bureau release of 1 November 2026, EPFO’s verified WhatsApp service will let members check their PF balance, their latest five transactions and passbook information. The announcement also refers to personalised guidance on PMVBRY-related requirements. This may help members get routine account information without searching through multiple channels.
The release does not give a WhatsApp number or a date when every feature will be available. Members should wait for access details from EPFO’s official channels and should not share their Aadhaar number, bank details, password or one-time password with an unverified contact.
Which inoperative accounts may be settled automatically?
EPFO also announced automatic settlement of eligible inoperative EPF accounts with balances up to ₹1,000. The account must be Aadhaar-verified, and identity and bank-account checks must be completed. Eligible members will not need to file an individual claim for that settlement. EPFO estimated that about one lakh accounts, involving approximately ₹5 crore in total, could benefit.
The ₹1,000 limit and verification conditions are important. The announcement does not mean that every inactive PF account will be paid automatically. Members whose details need correction, or whose account balance is above that limit, should follow the applicable EPFO claim process.
What should members do now?
- Check that Aadhaar and bank details recorded for the PF account are accurate.
- Use only WhatsApp access details published or confirmed by EPFO.
- Review the PF balance and transaction information when the verified service becomes available.
- For an unresolved claim, consult EPFO’s official guidance instead of assuming automatic settlement.
Does this change employer compliance?
The PIB release describes EPFO member services and small-account settlement. It does not announce a new employer contribution rate, return or deadline. Employers can share the update with staff while continuing their existing provident fund processes.
