EPFO Wage Ceiling ₹15,000 → ₹25,000

A detailed 48-question FAQ document relating to the enhancement of the EPFO wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month, stated to be effective from 17 September 2026, is presently circulating across professional and industry groups. The document contains detailed guidance on September payroll/ECR calculations, EPS coverage, CTC impact, contractor compliance and PM-VBRY.

This change impacts EPF coverage and the calculation of statutory PF contributions for eligible employees.

ParameterEarlierFrom September 2026
Statutory wage ceiling₹15,000/month₹25,000/month
Maximum employee PF contribution at the ceiling (12%)₹1,800₹3,000
Maximum employer EPS contribution (8.33%)₹1,250₹2,083
Maximum employer EPF contribution (3.67%)₹550₹917
EDLI contribution (0.50%)₹75₹125

Who is impacted?

  • Employees with PF wages between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 per month who were previously outside mandatory coverage may now become eligible for mandatory EPF coverage, subject to applicable rules.
  • Existing PF members whose contributions are restricted to the statutory ceiling may see their employee PF contribution increase based on the revised ceiling and applicable PF wages.

  • Employer contributions towards EPF, EPS, and EDLI may also increase where contributions are calculated using the statutory ceiling.

How does the revised wage ceiling impact employees?

The impact depends on the employee's PF wages and the PF contribution configuration. The following examples illustrate the impact when PF is calculated at 12% of applicable PF wages.

Employee's PF wagesEarlier ceilingRevised ceilingEmployee PF contribution at 12%Impact
₹15,000₹15,000₹25,000₹1,800No change. PF contribution remains ₹1,800 when calculated on ₹15,000 PF wages.
₹20,000₹15,000₹25,000₹2,400The employee may now fall under mandatory EPF coverage, subject to applicable rules. If PF is calculated on the full PF wage, the contribution is ₹2,400.
₹25,000₹15,000₹25,000₹3,000The employee may now fall under mandatory EPF coverage, subject to applicable rules. If PF is calculated on the full PF wage, the contribution is ₹3,000.

Example:

  • PF wages of ₹15,000: ₹15,000 × 12% = ₹1,800
  • PF wages of ₹20,000: ₹20,000 × 12% = ₹2,400
  • PF wages of ₹25,000: ₹25,000 × 12% = ₹3,000

However, an important caution: as of today, we have not been able to independently locate this FAQ document as an officially published EPFO FAQ/circular on the EPFO website/portal. The current EPFO employer portal also does not surface this document in its published updates.

The circulating document itself makes several significant operational statements—for example, a single ECR for September 2026, proportionate contribution calculations from 17 September, and specific treatment of EPS membership.

👉 Our suggestion: The document may be useful for understanding the possible implementation approach, but employers and professionals should exercise caution and should not treat the circulating FAQs as an authenticated EPFO clarification until officially published/confirmed by EPFO.

For statutory implementation, organisations should continue to track official EPFO circulars, portal instructions and system changes.
