Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Act, 2017

The Law and Judiciary Department publishes this official compilation of the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 2017. Its stated text date is 31 December 2025. The compilation lists amendments by Maharashtra Acts 24 of 2022 and 56 of 2025; it is not presented here as a consolidation of all developments after that date.

What the Act covers

The contents distinguish registration and intimation, opening and closing hours, working time, weekly rest, leave with pay, welfare, records, returns and enforcement. Read section 1, the definitions and sections 3–5 before using a substantive provision. Registration and intimation routes should be checked against the version and subsequent instruments actually in force.

Research an establishment, not just a state label

Identify the activity, worker group, headcount and any exemption. Use the operative Rules and later state notifications alongside the Act. The fact that an establishment operates in Maharashtra does not establish that every chapter applies to every person working there.
