Maharashtra Shops: earned leave, casual leave and holidays

Maharashtra Shops Act section 18 reference for earned leave, casual leave, accumulation, festival holidays and payment conditions, connected to the prescribed leave book and notice.

Who this applies to

Workers in establishments covered by the relevant Act provisions; check section 1 application, section 3 exclusions and valid exemptions

Applying the leave rules

Separate the 240-day eligibility test from the days which actually earn leave. Section 18(8) allows certain absence categories to count for the qualifying threshold without earning leave for those days.

Record requests and refusals in Form O. The ordinary 45-day accumulation limit must be read with the encashment provision where due leave applied for fifteen days in advance is refused. Do not automatically delete that excess balance.

Apply the precise separation-payment conditions in section 18(6), the holiday exclusions in section 18(9) and wage calculation in section 18(10). The table is not a substitute for those conditions.

Source and version

Section 18(1)–(10); final Rules 19–20 / Forms O and P. Section 18 reviewed against the official Act compilation expressly stated as at 31 December 2025, including listed amendments. This is not a claim that every subsequent exemption or notification has been consolidated.
